Jakob Favela

Kids’ Chance of Hawaii
Scholarship Recipient

My name is Jacob Favela, and I am the youngest child of Officer Steve Favela, who died in the line of duty on November 26, 2006. Like my older siblings, Keahi, Kiana, and Matthew, I’ve had the honor of receiving the Kid’s Chance Hawaii Scholarship, and I’m proud to follow in their footsteps as a student at Chapman University.

I’m currently entering my sophomore year at Chapman, where I was accepted into the Fowler School of Engineering. I’m majoring in Data Science and Game Development, an exciting field that allows me to combine creativity with technology. Thanks to your generous scholarship, I’ve been able to pursue my academic goals in ways I never imagined possible. My first year was filled with new friendships and meaningful learning experiences in subjects like computer science, microeconomics, and electronics.

My father, Officer Steve Favela, served with the Honolulu Police Department from 1998 until 2006. In the final three years of his service, he was a proud member of HPD’s elite Solo Bike Unit, a position he dreamed about attaining since joining the force. On November 21, 2006, while assigned to a presidential motorcade escorting President George W. Bush at Hickam Air Force Base, my dad lost control of his motorcycle on the wet pavement. He was critically injured in the crash and, after five days of fighting for his life, passed away on November 26. Over the years, I’ve heard many stories from his fellow officers about his bravery, humility, and commitment to protecting others. My father died a hero, and his legacy continues to inspire me. It also reminds me of the daily sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the country, thank you for honoring his legacy.

I am deeply grateful to Kid’s Chance of Hawaii, not only for supporting my education, but for embracing our family as part of their `ohana. I look forward to seeing all my Kid’s Chance Hawaii aunties every summer when I’m back home from college. Your generosity has had a profound impact on our lives. By easing the financial burden of tuition, your scholarship has made it possible for me and my older siblings to pursue our dreams of attending college on the mainland. Thank you for ensuring that kids like me, who have faced the loss of a parent, are still able to have the same educational opportunities as those with two parents. Your belief in me and your investment in my future mean more than words can express!
